Michael Jordan on LaMelo Ball: ‘He has exceeded our expectations’

Fresh off of being named the NBA Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month, Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball earned a bit more praise for his early play this season from team owner, and Hall of Famer, Michael Jordan.

Ball became the fifth rookie in franchise history to win the award multiple times after averaging 20.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.7 steals in 13 games in February. He led all rookies in points and assists per game while he was second in rebounds and third in steals.

“I think Melo has adjusted to the NBA game better than any of us ever thought this early in his career,” Jordan told The Associated Press. “He has exceeded our expectations so far this season.”

The third overall pick on Wednesday was also named to the NBA Rising Stars roster, the annual showcase of the top young talent in the league. While the game will not be played this year, the NBA still honored those players deserving of the honor.

Ball has emerged as the likely frontrunner to win the Rookie of the Year award following his start to the season. Behind the play of Ball, and others, the Hornets are right in the thick of the playoff race and appear to be on the verge of an early berth for the first time since 2016.
