Miami tight end Cam McCormick returning for unprecedented ninth year of college football
There are college football veterans, and then there is Cam McCormick.
The Miami Hurricanes tight end announced he is returning to UM for his ninth season of college football, making his decision known on social media.
McCormick is eligible for a ninth season due to multiple season-ending injuries he suffered while playing at Oregon. He said in September that he needed to petition the ACC for another season of eligibility.
“Appreciate all the support!” McCormick wrote on social media.
Two players previously played eight seasons of college football like McCormick has, but neither played last season, making McCormick likely the longest-tenured college football player.
McCormick started his college career at Oregon in 2016 and redshirted his freshman year. In January 2017, he was hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis after intense workouts. He played in seven games that season. McCormick missed nearly all of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 seasons due to an ankle injury that needed multiple surgeries.
McCormick returned in 2021 but suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury two games into the season. He played 13 games in 2022 before transferring to Miami. McCormick played 13 games in 2023, starting 11.
Last season, he had eight catches for 62 yards, earning a 42.8 offensive grade from Pro Football Focus. McCormick had a 35.9 receiving grade with a 60.2 pass-blocking grade and a 56.3 run-blocking grade.
“I love playing football,” McCormick said in September. “I love being part of a team. And obviously, my why: my family, my best friend who passed away last year. When things are getting tough, I tell myself why I’m doing it and who I’m doing it for. To have that opportunity at the next level and live out my dream that I’ve had since a little kid.”
