LSU uniforms for Mississippi State game pay tribute to missed season due to World War I

LSU’s uniforms for Saturday night’s game against Mississippi State are part of a special 1918 tribute. And they feature purple helmets that change colors.

The No. 5 Tigers are paying homage to the lost season of that year; LSU didn’t play 100 years ago because of World War I and Saturday night’s all-white uniforms don’t have names on the back for those unknown soldiers that were lost in the war.

The school has a grove of oak trees on campus that pays tribute to those who died in the war. You can see a pattern of oak leaves in the purple trim and numbers on the jerseys.

The helmet on the uniform looks purple. But it changes color to gold under the light. That’s going to look really cool in the second half after the sun sets in Baton Rouge.

Here’s a better look at the helmets. They could not change colors and still look ridiculously awesome.

The flag decal on the back of the helmet even flashes back 100 years. From LSU’s site:

The back of the helmet acknowledges 1918 as the Silent Season and as the year the United States claimed victory in World War I. The American flag decal depicts a 1918 flag with 48 stars, as Alaska and Hawaii had not yet been admitted into the Union.

Well done, LSU. If you play as well as you look then you’ll have no trouble beating Mississippi State.
