Grading each position group on Texas’ offense

As Texas enters the thick of spring practice, we are starting to get a feel for the strengths and weaknesses of the roster. The offensive side of the ball has the chance to be exciting in the fall.

The running back room stands out with Bijan Robinson and Roshon Johnson leading the charge. Keilan Robinson, Johnathan Brooks and freshman Jaydon Blue make up one of the top running back rooms in the nation.

Texas’ staff did a great job of improving the tight end and wide receiver positions in the offseason. The addition of two talented quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Maalik Murphy are excellent talents for Sark to work with. Isaiah Neyor is an experienced wide-out who is capable of making big plays opposite Xavier Worthy.

Kyle Flood faces a huge offseason to develop his offensive line unit. Texas prioritized the high school ranks over the transfer portal to add talent to the group.

Using overall talent, depth and experience as key factors, here is a ranking of each position group on Texas’ offense.

Quarterback: B

Texas received a shot in the arm at the quarterback position this offseason. Quinn Ewers and Maalik Murphy add an influx of talent behind Hudson Card. The overall depth and talent of the quarterback room is the best it has been in recent years.

Running back: A+

Texas boasts one of the top running back rooms in the country. Bijan Robinson is an established All-American with an NFL career in his near future. Behind Robinson is excellent depth and leadership. Texas has nothing to worry about with its running backs in 2022.

Wide receiver: B+

Xavier Worthy and Isaiah Neyor headline an exciting Texas wide receiver room. Neyor’s presence will take some of the defense’s attention away from the freshman All-American Worthy. The biggest question mark in the room is Jordan Whittington’s health. Keep Whittington on the field and Texas will have one of the better trios in the Big 12.

Tight end: B+

Texas’ tight end group has one of the highest ceilings on the team. Alabama transfer Jahleel Billingsley brings a veteran presence along with the talented sophomores Ja’Tavion Sanders and Gunnar Helm. This grade may end up much higher after the season.

Offensive line: C+

Texas hit a home run in the 2022 recruiting cycle at offensive line. Unfortunately, the Horns are waiting on many of those guys to get to campus in the summer. While some solid experience returns from the 2021 season, the offensive line is lacking depth during the spring.
