Four-star recruit decommits from Penn State

Penn State finished off its first week of spring football practices with a notable recruiting weekend, but the Nittany Lions are also now with one less commit in the Class of 2023. Neeo Avery, a four-star edge rusher out of Maryland, announced he has decommitted from Penn State and re-opened his recruitment.

“I just want to start this off by saying thank-you to the whole Penn State staff for taking a chance on me and giving me an opportunity to play ball at the next level,” Avery said in a statement posted on his Twitter account on Sunday morning. “For that, I can’t thank y’all enough and this decision that my family and I have come to, this has been very hard.”

“But with that being said, I will be decommitting and my recruitment is 100% back open,” Avery announced.

Avery committed to Penn State’s Class of 2023 on December 31, 2021. Now, almost three months later, Avery is back to weighing his options for his future. It remains to be seen if Penn State will come back into the fold or where exactly Penn State stands, but it is wise for a player to take the extra time to make sure they are making what they feel is the best decision possible for themselves. Whether that ends up being Penn State or not, Avery has every right to take as much time as he needs to make a pick he ultimately feels most comfortable with.

With Avery reopening his recruitment, that could be good news for Georgia and Maryland. Avery was reportedly close to committing to Georgia last summer, and the Bulldogs are coming off a national championship. Maryland continues to be putting in good work in recruiting under Mike Locksley and keeping a four-star defensive end home, and away from Penn State, would be a huge recruiting victory for the Terrapins.

But, for now, we’ll monitor the status of Avery as he continues his recruitment.
