Former LSU tight end Arik Gilbert currently away from Georgia football program

Last season we saw the on again off again from LSU tight end Arik Gilbert. He opted out late in the season with the intention of transferring away from the program.

As a member of the Tigers football team, the top tight end of the 2020 class hauled in 35 passes for 368 yards. Gilbert was third in receptions and fourth in yards for LSU. He would opt-out prior to the games against Florida and Ole Miss.

It appeared that Gilbert was heading to Florida, but signs pointing to optimism that he would return to Baton Rouge. All of that went away when he decided to return to his home state with the Georgia Bulldogs. Current head coach Kirby Smart spoke to the media on Saturday following their first scrimmage of the fall camp.

“Arik is dealing with some personal issues,” Smart said. “We love him… Our thoughts and prayers are with him now and we hope to get him back soon.”

Gilbert transferred to Georgia this summer, making his way to campus on June 1. He went through summer workouts with the team and earned recognition for his work in the classroom. He began preseason camp with the program but left the team sometime this week. – per 247Sports
