Final gold medal in PyeongChang goes to most decorated Winter Olympian ever

With 39 total medals and 14 gold medals, the athletes of Norway will return home to their countrymen as the undisputed champions of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games — and the greatest among them will be Marit Bjorgen.

Bjorgen finished a legendary couple of weeks with a bang, winning the final gold medal of the Games in the Ladies’ 30km Mass Start event. She beat second place Krista Parmakowski of Finland by an unthinkable 1 minute and 49 seconds.

The 37-year-old arrived already the winningest cross-country skier in World Cup history, so she could’ve left the Games with zero medals and her legacy as the GOAT would’ve still been intact. Instead, she became the most decorated Winter Olympian of all time.

That final gold was just the tip of the iceberg for Bjorgen, who absolutely cleaned up in PyeongChang. She won three golds (ladies’ 30km, 4×5 relay and 30k mass start), one silver in the team pursuit and two bronze medals in the 10km and the team sprint.

She now has 15 career Olympic medals, two more than biathlete Ole Einar Bjørndalen, who held the record prior to these 2018 Games.
