D-backs Triple-A affiliate accomplishes extremely rare feat in 25-run outburst

The Reno Aces accomplished a rare feat on Monday.

Reno, the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, notched 25 hits in a dominant 25-8 win over the Tacoma Rainiers. Nine of those 25 hits came off the bats of Yasmany Tomas, who launched four home runs, and Matt Szczur, who hit for the cycle.

According to ESPN, the combination of a four-homer game and a cycle has happened just once in the major leagues. It happened 87 years ago when Lou Gehrig went yard four times and Tony Lazzeri hit for the cycle for the 1932 New York Yankees. That’s pretty good company, huh?

Tomas got the party started with a three-run bomb to right field in the bottom of the first. Tomas added a solo shot in the third, a two-run homer in the fifth and another solo homer in the eighth. He added an RBI single in the Aces’ nine-run fifth inning for good measure.

In all, Tomas finished the day 5-for-6 with eight RBIs and four runs scored. He became the first Aces player to ever hit four long balls in a single game and became the first Pacific Coast League player to do so since 2008.

Meanwhile, Szczur got his home run out of the way in his first at-bat, launching a shot to left center. He then doubled in the fifth, singled in the sixth and smoked a stand-up triple in the seventh to complete the cycle.

Tomas and Szczur combined for five of the team’s 10 home runs on the afternoon. Kevin Cron added two of his own, increasing his PCL-leading total to 21 on the year while helping the Aces score a franchise-record 25 runs. Cron also had five runs scored and six RBIs.

While Cron has yet to make his big league debut, Tomas and Szczur are both itching to return to the show. Tomas, a native of Cuba, spent parts of three seasons with the D-backs, including a 31-homer, 83-RBI year in 2016. He played 47 games with the D-backs in 2017 but was demoted. He hasn’t returned to the majors since.

Szczur played in 202 games over four seasons with the Chicago Cubs, earning a World Series ring in 2016. After the Cubs designated him for assignment in 2017, Szczur was picked up by the San Diego Padres. He played 161 games for the Padres but entered free agency after the 2018 season. Arizona signed him to a minor league deal and he was recently activated from the injured list after dealing with an oblique injury.
