Colorado State coach Mike Bobo declines $100,000 raise after rough 3-9 season
Mike Bobo isn’t happy with how his team played this season.
Bobo led the Colorado State Rams to just a 3-9 record this fall, the worst record of his four-year tenure in Fort Collins.
Instead of just moving on and preparing to remedy that next season, the 44-year-old wanted to take accountability for the rough year. So, he did what most college coaches would never dream of doing.
Bobo declined to receive an automatic $100,000 raise that he was due for 2019.
“I’m the head football coach, and I believe accountability is a two-way street,” Bobo said on Tuesday morning. “A lot of times you want to point figures at why you weren’t successful. I’m the head coach. For it to be a two-way street and be effective with our players, I want to take accountability.
“It was just something that was on my heart, and being the head coach I wanted to take personal accountability for the 2018 season.”

Per Bobo’s contract, he is due to earn a $100,000 raise in every year of his contract through 2022. He will make $1.8 million again in 2019, however, his decision will have no effect on his contract moving forward — meaning he will still make $2 million in 2020 as scheduled.
“It was really Mike’s decision. … I thought that was a pretty telling step,” athletic director Joe Parker said. “It really speaks to the character of Mike Bobo and really how he feels about his leadership of the program and where he thinks we need to be as opposed to where we were this year.”

Bobo — who was hospitalized before the start of the season for complications with peripheral neuropathy — has compiled a 24-27 record in his four years at Colorado State. Last season was the first in his tenure that the Rams failed to reach a bowl game.
