Chargers’ biggest needs after first wave of free agency
The Chargers have been busy building their roster, trading for Khalil Mack, signing multiple players, and bringing back a few of their own.
Even though general manager Tom Telesco has done an excellent job at piecing together a solid foundation in the early stages, plenty of work still needs to be done.
With that being said, here’s a ranking of the Bolts’ five biggest needs following the first wave of free agency:
Right tackle
Bryan Bulaga is no longer with the Chargers after having his two seasons riddled by injuries during his time with L.A. Storm Norton’s poor play against the Raiders exemplified that he isn’t reliable enough to be counted on as a long-term starter. Trey Pipkins played well in his two starts and should be given a shot to compete for the job in the summer, but the team still needs a bonafide starter to protect Justin Herbert.
Right guard
In the five games as the starter, Oday Aboushi was a difference-maker. But unfortunately, his one-year stint was cut short after suffering a torn ACL. Aboushi is still a candidate to be brought back. But if the Chargers don’t see him as a part of their plans moving forward, they will need someone to fill that spot.
Running back
Austin Ekeler thrived in his first season under Joe Lombardi, reaching 20 total touchdowns, which tied for the most this season. However, he will need a running mate moving forward to ensure longevity, and that guy doesn’t appear to be on the roster. Justin Jackson is no longer on the roster. Joshua Kelley and Larry Rountree had their opportunities but left a lot to be desired.
Wide receiver
The Chargers have a strong core heading into the season with Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, who was recently extended, and Josh Palmer. However, one thing is sure: Los Angeles still needs a speed/yards-after-the-catch weapon.
Defensive depth
The Chargers’ primary focus during the first wave of free agency was adding pieces to Brandon Staley’s defense. Even with J.C. Jackson, they need cornerback depth behind him, Michael Davis and Asante Samuel Jr. Joey Bosa and Mack are arguably one of the league’s top pass-rushing duos, but they need another edge defender to pair with Chris Rumph II as situational pass rushers. Sebastian Joseph-Day and Austin Johnson are instant upgrades to the interior part of the defensive line. Still, they can benefit from one more player to complement Christian Covington and Breiden Fehoko.
