Milwaukee Brewers minor-league shortstop Julio Mendez is in “critical, but stable condition” after being hit in the chest with a pitch during Saturday’s game.

In the ninth inning of the team’s Rookie League game against the Angels, Mendez experienced a “cardiac event” after being hit in the heart with a pitch.

The team released a statement Sunday, asking fans to send “thoughts and prayers” to Mendez and his family.

After being hit, Mendez was tended to by trainers and paramedics. He was carted off the field on a stretcher and immediately taken to a local hospital. The teams opted to call the game following the play.

The 20-year-old Mendez has been a member of Milwaukee’s organization since 2014. He’s hitting .252/.290/.309 over two levels this season.
