Babe Ruth bat used to hit his 500th home run sold for more than $1 million

An iconic Babe Ruth bat is headed to a new home.

The bat Ruth used to hit his 500th career home run was auctioned off on Saturday in Southern California for more than $1 million, according to the Associated Press. SCP Auctions, which ran the auction on Saturday, did not reveal the buyer.

Ruth autographed the bat and gave it to former Suffern, New York, mayor Jim Rice in the 1940s, per the report. The Rice family held on to it for nearly 75 years before putting it up for auction.

Ruth was the first MLB player in history to hit the 500-home-run mark, doing so in 1929 against the Cleveland Indians. He is currently third on the all-time homers list with 714, trailing just Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds. Albert Pujols is the closest active player to catching Ruth with 656 career home runs.

The bat auctioned off on Saturday isn’t the first of Ruth’s to carry a seven-figure price tag. Per the report, the bat Ruth used to hit his first home run at Yankee Stadium in 1923 sold for nearly $1.3 million in 2004.
