ASU basketball fans call for head coach Bobby Hurley to be fired: 'It's time for a change'

Should Arizona State fire basketball coach Bobby Hurley?

Many fans took to social media in the aftermath of the Sun Devils' 90-57 loss to Utah in the Pac-12 Tournament on Wednesday night calling for the university to fire its men's basketball coach after ASU's 14-18 overall record this season.

ASU lost its last four games of the season by a combined 71 points.

After a 4-0 start to Pac-12 conference play, Hurley's team went 4-13 in its last 17 games of the season.

Those numbers did not sit well with some Arizona State fans, who vented their desire for Arizona State to move on from Hurley after the 33-point loss to Utah in the first round of the conference tournament.

Could Arizona State fire Bobby Hurley?

Bobby Hurley's predecessor at ASU, Herb Sendek, went 159-137 in nine seasons at ASU.

Hurley is 155-131.

But could ASU move on from Hurley as head coach?

The Sun Devils don't currently have an official athletic director.

Ray Anderson resigned from the position on Nov. 13 and Jim Rund, ASU Senior Vice President for Educational Outreach and Student Services, has been serving as the interim athletic director for ASU ever since.

Hurley is earning $3.1 million this season as ASU's coach, with USA TODAY Sports recently including him on a list of the five most overpaid coaches in men's college basketball.

Paul Myerberg summed up Hurley's Arizona State tenure in the story: "Arizona State won four in a row to open this season's Pac-12 schedule but finished the regular season tied with Stanford and USC near the bottom of the conference. That's been part of the story of Hurley's broader tenure, which began with some major hype in 2015 but has been unable to maintain brief periods of success. That includes back-to-back tournament bids in 2018 and 2019 along with what would have been a likely appearance in the canceled 2020 tournament. But that's been followed by three losing seasons in four years, putting Hurley on the hot seat after nine seasons with the program. He's earning $3.1 million in 2023-24."

Could Bobby Hurley leave Arizona State?

The Arizona Republic's Jason Wolf and USA TODAY Sports' Steve Berkowitz reported Wednesday that the ASU coach has not signed his contract extension with Arizona State a year after it was announced, making his future at the school potentially murky.

"The terms of the unsigned contract extension were approved by the Arizona Board of Regents in April 2023 and included up to a $2 million buyout, should Hurley leave ASU early for a coaching job with another school," Wolf and Berkowitz reported. "But absent a signed extension, Hurley could leave ASU this summer and owe the university nothing. His signed contract expires June 30."
