Astros minor leaguer loses home run in the strangest way possible
When is a home run not really a home run?
When you don’t touch home plate. That’s when.
Unfortunately for Houston Astros prospect Miguelangel Sierra, he somehow overlooked that all important detail during a Carolina League playoff game on Wednesday.
Sierra, who plays shortstop for the Astros’ High-A affiliate, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, was called out after he missed home plate following a long blast over the left-center field fence during Game 1 of their playoff series against the Down East Wood Ducks.
The would-be homer was Fayetteville’s first hit of the game, but will go down as a triple and a 1-2 putout in the scorebook thanks to his mind-numbing gaffe.
Short of Jose Canseco head-butting a home run over the fence, it’s difficult to imagine there being a more embarrassing moment for a baseball player.
At the same time, you have to credit Down East catcher Sam Huff and home-plate umpire Steven Jaschinski for paying attention to the details. Had either of them missed Sierra hopping over home plate, the home run would have stood and the game may have gone in a completely different direction.
As it was, Sierra’s squad ended up losing the first game of Wednesday’s playoff doubleheader, 3-0. Sierra found himself on the bench in Game 2, which Fayetteville won 3-0 to even the series.
Because of the threat of Hurricane Dorian, it’s not known when or where the series will continue. When it does, you can bet Sierra will be looking to atone for Wednesday’s error.
