Owners of Real-Life ‘Conjuring’ House Sue Filmmakers

“The Conjuring” turned one couple’s lives into a real-life nightmare, they say.

But it’s not the ghosts featured in the film that are causing problems, it’s the film’s fans. The owners of the real-life “Conjuring” house in Rhode Island are suing Warner Brothers and the makers of the movie, claiming that trespassing fans have ruined their peaceful lives in their home.

Norma Sutcliffe, 68, owns the home that inspired the film, which follows the haunting of the Perron family in the 1970s. Though the movie was filmed in North Carolina, the filmmakers used some real names of those involved, making Sutcliffe’s property easy to find by sleuthing fans.

The old farmhouse is relatively open, so despite signs that say “No trespassing,” it’s easy to access her property, Sutcliffe says.

Fans trek through her property and knock on her windows. She has received harassing phone calls in the middle of the night telling her to demolish the home because of the supposed evil it contains.

“It’s a violation of our privacy, but they think they have the right to do it,” Sutcliffe says.

Even Andrea Perron, the eldest Perron sister who experienced the haunting that inspired the film and is friends with Sutcliffe, says the house is besieged by trespassers, making life difficult for the Sutcliffes and the entire community – and they are more frightful than the spirits in the house.

Though Sutcliffe has told reporters recently she doesn’t believe the house is haunted, she tells Perron in a video from 2013, the year “The Conjuring” was released, that she experienced some spooky incidents. She’s heard footsteps and the banging of doors, as well as the sound of people talking in another room, and says her bed has vibrated before.

None of that bothers her, though. The real people walking around and banging on windows are those who are bothering her.

The Sutcliffes are seeking unspecified damages and a state-of-the-art security system.
