Like most of his racing peers, Jimmie Johnson spends the bulk of his time in the Charlotte, NC area. But judging by his recent actions on the real estate front, the five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion is also in a New York state of mind.
Johnson and his wife, Chandra, recently sold one apartment in the West Village, moving up a few floors to a larger unit in the same building, the NY Post reports.
Johnson bought the first Big Apple unit, (pictured above), for just under $8.5 million in 2009. The 3-bedroom, 3.5-bath condo spans 2,626 square feet and boasts sleek modern finishes. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living and dining area capture city and river views.
But with the Johnson family expanding — Chandra gave birth to the couple’s second daughter, Lydia, earlier this month — a larger space may have been in the cards. And with luxe amenities including a 24-hour doorman, children’s playroom and a health club, why leave the building?
Perhaps that explains why Johnson sold his former apartment for $10.5 million, only to turn around and drop $14.25 million on a larger space with even more breathtaking views.

The 3,234-square-foot condo has 5 bedrooms, 4.5 baths and nearly identical finishes as the smaller unit. The open floor plan provides ample room for mom, dad and the girls to each have their own space.
Johnson won’t have time to relax in his new pad anytime soon. He’s currently third in championship standings behind Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch. Race three of the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup is this weekend at Dover International Speedway.
