Harry Potter (Well, Daniel Radcliffe) Could Be Your Landlord -- But at $19K, It’s No Cupboard Under the Stairs

How far Harry Potter has come from his cupboard under the stairs!

Forgive us the inevitable reference. Even the listing agent couldn’t resist: Daniel Radcliffe’s Manhattan apartment rental listing is subtly headlined “Mercer Street Magic.” (Click through our slideshow here to see the home.)

Yes, Radcliffe is renting out his SoHo apartment in architect Jean Nouvel’s super-hip 40 Mercer Street building, as we learned from our friends at Zillow Blog. He paid $4.3 million for the 1,843-square-foot, two-bedroom, three-bath pad back in 2007.

But will it take special powers to get someone to pony up $19K a month to live there?

We think not. We speculate it could already be rented by the time you read this. After all, designer Marc Jacobs is also attempting to rent his sleek apartment in the same building, and asking almost twice the price — $37,500, for an apartment that is considerably less than twice the size — 2,500 square feet. Although Jacobs’ does have three bedrooms and four baths.

So what will the lucky renter get, in addition to bragging rights about having Daniel Radcliffe as a landlord? The apartment has “a very pleasing, flexible layout, a chef’s kitchen, fantastic ceiling height and beautiful light throughout,” according to the Halstead Properties listing. There are also city views, of course. And Zillow calls the master bath a “showstopper” with its wood, marble and stainless steel accents.

The building’s amenities include a concierge, a gym, an indoor swimming pool, and a garage with direct access, which is rare in Manhattan.

But don’t expect to see Radcliffe zooming through the halls. Apparently he rented out his Mercer Street apartment right after he bought it (which, if you’re counting, means he was a Manhattan landlord at the ripe old age of 18; he’s now 26). He reportedly lives in a three-bedroom corner apartment at 1 Morton Square that he bought in early 2008 for $4.9 million.

But in all honesty, the busy actor probably won’t be spending much time at any home in the next little while, as he’s in some stage of production on five films: “Swiss Army Man,” “Brooklyn Bridge,” “Young Americans,” “Imperium” and “Now You See Me: The Second Act.”
