Yahoo News editor Lauren Johnston traveled to Cuba on a people-to-people visa in November to run the Havana Marathon. While the restrictions around visits to Cuba have loosened considerably since President Obama announced he and President Raúl Castro would reestablish diplomatic relations between the two countries, travelers are still required to maintain a full schedule of educational and cultural experiences while visiting the island. Johnston stayed outside Havana in a “casa particular,” a room in a family home — a system that is basically a state-run version of Airbnb. While there, she ran the marathon, visited a school, toured a historic cemetery, drank a few mojitos and wandered the streets of Old Havana. Here’s what she saw.
