Chris Christie, 52, the governor of New Jersey, is running for the Republican nomination for President. Before his election in 2009, he served for six years as United States Attorney for New Jersey and built a reputation for jailing corrupt local officials. Outspoken and combative with the press and public, he is viewed among Republicans as relatively moderate on social issues. He won praise for his handling of Hurricane Sandy, but his second term has been shadowed by the indictments of some of his key aides, accused of intentionally causing a traffic jam in the city of Fort Lee in a political dispute with the mayor.
