Twins Living on Opposite Sides of the World Become Dads on Same Day

Identical twin brothers who have the same eyes, smile, and hair color now have something else in common — babies born on the same day.

Stefan and Gareth Kershaw, 33, live 10,000 miles apart, but apparently are still quite in tune with each other.

“When we were given due dates of just three days apart, that was shocking enough,” Gareth, of Perth, Australia, told the Express about his wife Kate’s Oct. 7 due date. Stefan and his wife, Katie, who live in Cheshire, England, were given an Oct. 10 due date. But both babies arrived on Oct. 13. “We never imagined they would actually be born on the same day,” said Gareth. “When all the family found out, no one could quite believe it.”

The twins have beaten reported odds of 150,000 to one by welcoming their babies on the same day. “Gareth and I have been really close growing up,” Stefan told the Daily Mail Monday. “And even though he lives in Australia, we are still really close and keep in touch all the time. When we knew that both our wives had given birth on the same day, we couldn’t believe it. All the family were flabbergasted.”

Recalling their lives growing up, Stefan told the Express, “People would always mistake us for each other. I once cheated on a girlfriend and kissed another girl, but I blamed it on Gareth. We then worked at a restaurant for 10 years where Gareth was head chef and I was manager,” he added. “Customers would wave at him in the street, and then complain to me that I’d been rude and ignored them.”

The Kershaws aren’t the first twins to become parents on the same day. In 2015, U.K. twin sisters Katie Bowden and Amy Meredith-Davies gave birth on June 10. And in 2012, identical twin sisters Zaakira Mitchell and Shaakira White, both 20, became moms on the same day in the same South Carolina hospital.

Gareth and Stefan, meanwhile, are planning to get together with their newly expanded families for a reunion in May. “It will be great to see Gareth and Kate and finally meet my little nephew [Harvey],” Stefan said. “When him and [my daughter] Imogen are old enough, we will tell them about their extraordinary arrival into the world — 10,000 miles apart. I’m sure they will have as close a bond as Gareth and I.’

On Facebook, Gareth, referring to the media coverage of their babies’ births, wrote, “Might as well jump on the wagon! Will take donations for the family reunion in May.”
