Second-Grader's Letter to Santa Puts Holiday in Perspective

In a heartbreaking holiday letter, one young boy is asking Santa for food, and to “bring [his] mom back alive for Christmas.”

The letter, which was written by a second-grader in North Carolina’s Rowan County, whose name has not been shared publicly, lists a number of Christmas wishes, including Barbie dolls for his sister and a bike with training wheels. But it’s his plea for “some more food,” and his mom, that now has a community rallying in his support.

Christian Wilson, a WBTV viewer, saw the letter and sent a photo of it to the news station, hoping that sharing the letter could get some help for the boy and his family. Wilson is also working with the boy’s teacher to provide the family some relief, according to the WBTV. “No child should have to ask Santa for food,” Wilson said.

It’s unclear where the boy’s mother is, or whether she is alive. As for his request for a meal, Kyna Grubb, executive director of Rowan Helping Ministries, told WBTV that 19 percent of families in the county live at or below the poverty line, so while the boy’s request is incredibly sad, it isn’t unique. Officials are accepting donations for the boy at locations around the county, including two insurance offices and a dance studio.

While the young boy may not get all his wishes granted this year, hopefully he can celebrate the holiday with a full stomach.
