Pregnant CNN Anchor Says Baby ‘Just Fine’ After She Passed Out on Live TV

Pregnant CNN anchor Poppy Harlow says her baby girl is doing “just fine” after she fainted on-air Monday morning.

While reporting on a poll about the satisfaction of Americans with the war on terror, the anchor began slurring her speech and eventually stopped talking altogether. Viewers couldn’t see what was happening because only Harlow’s voice could be heard while the poll graphic was shown onscreen, but the slurred speech was enough to alert viewers that something was wrong. The broadcast then went quiet for a few seconds before cutting away to CNN’s Brian Stelter. A moment later, Harlow reappeared onscreen and assured viewers that she was OK. “For all of you on Twitter who are asking if I’m OK, thank you so much,” she said. “I got a little hot, and I passed out for a moment. I am fine.”

Harlow, who announced in November that she is expecting her first child, a girl, in the spring, took to Twitter to assure fans that she and her baby are both doing well. “Thank you all for your concern and messages! I am OK! Passed out briefly and am with the doctor now. So thankful to our amazing CNN team,” she wrote. In a second tweet, she added: “Update from the hospital — our little girl due this spring is doing just fine. Was a scare but we are both OK. Thank you all so much!”

Viewers on Twitter called it a “frightening moment,” but according to the University of Minnesota Medical Center, feeling dizzy or faint during pregnancy is not uncommon. It is more typical during the first trimester but can happen anytime, often due to a drop in blood pressure. Fainting is not a danger to the mother or baby as long as it doesn’t involve a harmful fall, according to the medical center.

Harlow was back in the anchor seat again on Tuesday.
