Elderly Couple Steps In When Young Man Can’t Figure Out How to Tie His Tie

An image of two strangers — a young man struggling with his necktie and an older man assisting him with it — is going viral for its beautiful simplicity.

Facebook user Redd Desmond Thomas captured the moment between the unlikely pair in an Atlanta subway station Saturday. The image depicts the young man seated on the subway platform dressed in business attire and the older man bent over him, teaching him how to wear the accessory.

Thomas captioned the image: “The young guy sitting down was struggling with his tie. The woman in the red coat noticed and asked, ‘Do you know how to tie it properly?’ The young guy said, ‘No ma’am.’ She taps her husband and says, ‘Come to this side … and teach this young man how to tie his tie.” The older gentleman moved without hesitation [almost a reflex response] and gave him a step-by-step tutorial; then — afterward — the elder gentleman watched the young gentleman repeat the steps and show him that he had it. I was some distance away (but close enough to hear the exchange) and got even closer to snap this candid photo of the tutorial in progress before hopping on the train. I LOVE THIS!”

The photo has racked up 200,000 shares, more than 800,000 likes, and thousands of comments. “That’s love unconditional,” wrote one Facebook user. “So amazing, so helpful, what life should be like every day,” posted another. And: “A true act of kindness.”

Coincidentally, the image, depicting an impulsive, heartwarming gesture, was posted just one day after World Kindness Day, an international observance held annually to celebrate the idea of paying it forward. And it’s just the latest in a string of good deeds.

On Nov. 9, a couple in Colorado were on the receiving end of a similar gesture — while out dining with their 21-year-old son who has cerebral palsy, a nearby couple paid for their dinner and left a note on the receipt with the message, “It’s so lovely to see families united in Love. God Bless. — Brenda & George Pappas.” And on Wednesday, two rival basketball teams, from the University of Michigan and Ohio State, put aside their differences to cheer up a terminally ill 5-year-old boy, the grandson of one of the team’s former coaches: They decorated his home with a magnificent Christmas light display.
