Cops Step Up After Laundry Thief Steals Kids’ Clothes

A mother whose family’s belongings were stolen from a hotel laundry room was able to dress her four kids in warm clothes this week thanks to the kindness of two police officers.

A Massachusetts mom was staying with her kids in a New Jersey Best Western earlier this week when she decided to do laundry the night before driving her family home. Unfortunately, she fell asleep before her clothes finished in the dryer, and when she woke up on Monday morning, all the clothes were gone from the public laundry room, according to NJ.com. The kids and their mother, who the website doesn’t name, were left with nothing but their pajamas, according to the report. Considering the below-freezing temperatures, it was going to be a chilly ride home.

The mother reported the theft to the local Westampton Township Police Department, and the responding officers decided to take matters into their own hands. “I put myself in her position, having children of my own, and realizing how distraught and upset I would be,” Sgt. Andrew Brewer told NJ.com.

Brewer was able to arrange for an anonymous donation of clothing to replace the hundreds of dollars’ worth of clothes that were lost. He also escorted the mother, who was in town for a medical procedure after a recent cancer diagnosis, and her kids to Target for a free shopping spree, according to NJ.com. “She was very ecstatic about it. She was overwhelmingly happy and grateful for us coming to her need and helping her in this incident,” Brewer said.

In a Facebook photo shared Wednesday by the Westampton Township Police Department, the kids, ages 4 to 10, look happy to be in their new warm coats. “The kids were having a good time,” Brewer said. “It feels great just to give back to the community you serve.”
