Chelsea Clinton Admits It’s 'Frustrating' That She’s Following in Parents’ Footsteps

It’s common for kids to want to blaze a trail that’s different from their parents – and it turns out that’s the case even when your parents are Bill and Hillary Clinton.

In a conversation with Levo League, a career website for millennial women, Clinton opens up about trying to find her passion, as well as how annoyed she was to discover that her goals were similar to those of her parents. “While I was on Wall Street, I realized that the things I was most passionate about were the things that my parents were most passionate about, which was pretty frustrating,” the 35-year-old vice chair of the Clinton Foundation said Monday. “I’d worked really hard to find what I cared about, and ultimately through that hard work and introspection, I realized that I cared most about the things my parents, and particularly my mom, cared most about.”

Early in her career, Clinton worked at the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, and then spent three years on Wall Street, but ultimately she found that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Now, the mom to 5-month-old Charlotte is dedicated to “empowering women and girls, looking to democratize information and even more opportunity.”

And her career isn’t the only area in which Clinton has decided to follow her parents’ lead. “I’m so grateful that my parents took me around the state of Arkansas and then around the world so that I could see and appreciate why they worked so hard in what they felt called to do, but they also made sure that I went to Disney World as a kid,” she told E! after the Clinton Foundation’s No Ceilings initiative presentation on Monday.  “I hope that we are so blessed to expose and give Charlotte the same.”

But Clinton is preparing herself already for the fact that her daughter may not want to follow the family path. “We read her newspapers, we listen to NPR, right now she agrees with me on everything,” Clinton said. “I realize that’s not going to last forever, so I’m enjoying it now.”
