Ever since meteorologist Cindy Morgan announced that she is expecting her second child in March, the Rochester, Minn., TV newscaster has gotten some unexpected flak for her outfits.

“I’ve been told to wear maternity clothes (which I do), I look like I’m about ready to tip over, I show too much of my belly, and my choice in clothes is distasteful and disrespectful,” the nearly six-months-pregnant mother of one, son Grant, with husband Brian, vented on Facebook Tuesday. “Those are just a few comments folks have emailed or said to me… Since when has body shaming a pregnant woman become the thing to do?”

Since never, according to her boss, who has stepped up to support the broadcaster in a big way. The same day that Morgan (above, center) fired back at her fault finders and hashtagged a rally call: #embracethebump, ABC 6 News Director David Springer posted an open letter urging their station’s 81,000 followers on Facebook to “support and stand behind” her instead of criticizing.

“Being on TV can be scary,” declared Springer. “Say the wrong thing and you’re immortalized forever for all the wrong reasons. But imagine being pregnant and having to go on TV every day with no desk to hide behind.”

And as Morgan announced, she has no desire to duck out of the spotlight simply because she’s pregnant. “I proudly say I’m not ashamed of my bump,” she blasted in her Facebook post. “I will embrace my pregnancy and will gladly continue to visually offend those who disagree.” After all, she added, “Hiding the bump is outdated thinking.”

Comments bullying her into concealing her bump aren’t just cruel, she continued, they’re corrosive. “Bit-by-bit those comments take away a small piece of my excitement about my little girl’s arrival,” Morgan fumed, adding, “To have these things said is unacceptable. That goes for me, or for any woman.”

Her station’s dews director agreed, lamenting that Morgan’s on-camera role makes her an “easy target,” which he is also “upset” about. “Given the current state of social media, you can never fully protect people from nasty comments,” Springer wrote Tuesday. “We understand that. But we also understand that we can support and stand behind our co-workers, which is what we’re doing today.”

Vowing that “we here at ABC 6 News support the strong, professional women that work here, especially those who continue to put in all the necessary hours while also being pregnant,” he declared, “We are banding together and supporting Cindy. I hope you will too.”
