Watch Anchor’s Awkward On-Air Pregnancy Announcement

One meteorologist’s on-camera pregnancy announcement was news indeed — to her broadcast TV colleagues, whose hilariously confused reaction to the surprise interruption of their regular programming has gone viral on Facebook.

So, this happened,” Bakersfield, Calif., station KGET — TV 17 wrote in the headline of its Facebook post, sharing the über-awkward footage of chief meteorologist Alissa Carlson’s baby announcement on air Wednesday. Unbeknownst to news anchors Jim Scott and Tami Mlcoch, Carlson (above right) and producers had changed the script for the live broadcast to include an “additional forecast.”

“In a related weather, ah, report here,” Scott stumbles briefly reading the teleprompter following Carlson’s weather update, “one local forecast calls for some uncomfortable mornings, followed by widespread shopping, and record-setting joy and happiness. … Um.” Turning toward the mom-to-be, he then asks, clearly blindsided, “I’m sorry, I got all mixed up here. You have an additional forecast?”

“I do, I’m having a baby!” she declares, prompting a moment of stunned silence. “I had no idea,” anchor Mlcoch replies, turning to face the camera. “Wow. Congratulations.” And as Carlson shares that her baby is due in July, the screen shows a “Baby on Board” sign followed by a photo of the meteorologist’s two “fur babies,” her dogs Sunny and Stormy, alongside a KGET – TV onesie.

“Oh my goodness … They threw that in there, I had no idea what was coming,” Scott admitted, later adding, “No one here is more surprised than me. That is so awesome.”

This wasn’t the first time, though, that Carlson hijacked the news. Back in May 2014, Scott announced, “Alissa came to work with a big surprise for all of us, and now she’s going to share it with you.” The broadcaster held up her ring, declaring that she’d gotten engaged to attorney Neil Schwartz, and announced, “He popped the question last night!”

More than 1,700 people “liked” the video of KGET’s baby news announcement on Facebook, where Carlson herself replied in the comments section that she’s due July 25.

“My mom and I noticed you a little rounder 2 months ago,” one fan wrote, congratulating the broadcaster. “The body def changes!” Carlson replied. “I’m used to having a small waist, and that was the first to go!” Not that she minds. In another reply, the mom-to-be shared, “I have been feeling pretty good overall. Neil and I are very excited!”
