Zaya Wade, 12, speaks after father Dwyane says she came out as transgender: 'Be true to yourself'

Meet Zaya Wade. After Dwyane Wade opened up about his 12-year-old coming out as transgender, wife Gabrielle Union introduced their daughter Zaya to the world.

"She's compassionate, loving, whip smart and we are so proud of her," the actress wrote on Twitter. Union also shared an inspiring conversation between Zaya and her father. In the video, Zaya said she hopes people will live their truth despite any fear.

"Don't even think about that, you know, just be true to yourself," she declared. "What's the point of being on this earth if you're going to try to be someone you're not? It's like, you're not even living as yourself, which is the dumbest concept to me. Be true and don't really care what the 'stereotypical way' of being you is."

Zaya continued, "I think and I know it can get tough, definitely. But I think you push through and you be the best you... I think even through hard times, you gotta just push through. It's worth it. I feel like it's very worth it when you reach that point of yourself."

"Feeling free," remarked Dwyane. "Feeling like you don't have to hide."

"Yeah," Zaya affirmed. "Where you can look in the mirror and say, like, 'Hi,' to yourself. 'Nice to meet you' instead of, like, 'I don't really know who I am' like a full identity crisis."

Dwyane, 38, appeared on Tuesday’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show where he said he and Union are "proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community."

"Once Zaya ... came home — I don’t know if everyone knows, [she was] originally named Zion, born as a boy — came home and said, 'Hey, I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward I’m ready to live my truth. I want to be referenced as she and her. I would love for you guys to call me Zaya,'" the former NBA star recalled.

"We take our roles and responsibility as parents very seriously," he told DeGeneres. "So when our child comes home with a question, when a child comes home with an issue, when a child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information that we can, to give them the best feedback that we can — and that doesn’t change because sexuality is now involved in it."

When Zaya came out to him, Dwyane said, "'You are a leader. And this is our opportunity to allow you to be a voice.' Right now it’s through us, because she’s 12 years old, but eventually, it will be through her."

Celebrities and fans have applauded Union and Wade, with Chrissy Teigen writing "the love" they "have for their family is unmatched."

Union thanked everyone "who provided information, resources, love & encouragement."
