You'll get a kick out of this tournament

Jun. 12—NORWALK — Norwalk's first kickball tournament will be held in July and is still taking sign-ups.

Norwalk park and recreation department is hosting the first co-ed kickball tournament for everyone 16 years and older.

The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 17, in Baines Park. Sign-ups end at noon on July 14.

The 16 teams will participate in a double-elimination tournament.

Park and recreation superintendent Joe Lindenberger said 10 teams have already signed up to play.

"There was a kickball league that ran for two years in Sandusky that was quite popular. I heard a lot of positive talk about it," he said. "We tried to get this off the ground last fall but the weather and lateness in the season became an issue."

Lindenberger said he shared the idea to those involved with softball in the area, and there was "quite a bit of interest."

"We just want to give our residents something unique to do," he said. "Who doesn't love a fun game of kickball? Have a barbecue, pump music through the park and have fun."

Lindenberger said all three fields will be used for the day-long tournament.

"If all goes well, we will offer a kickball league in the fall on an open night at Baines Park," he said.
