York High School boys hockey team helping the community

YORK, Maine — The York High School boys hockey team is known for its volunteerism and community service. In keeping with tradition, the team held its annual collection for Toys for Tots.

The boys have been participating in the Toys for Tots campaign for about 18 years.

For a few weeks before the Fill-A-Fire Truck event, hockey players placed drop boxes in local businesses around town, as well at York High School and York Middle School. The team was able to collect donations such as toys, books, stuffed animals and games.

The team held their Toys for Tots game against Cape Elizabeth on Friday, Dec. 10. York Wildcats asked fans to bring a new unwrapped toy to the game. The team also asked families who were able to, to support this cause. Families did so, adding to the already successful collection from the community.

On Sunday, Dec. 12, the York boys hockey team attended the Fill-A-Fire Truck event at Hannaford in York. The team had initially set a goal of trying to collect 125 toys. This year the team successfully collected over 350 toys for families in the York area!

York and surrounding towns have many children in need. The “Toys for Tots” campaign sees to it that these children and young teens have a wonderful Christmas. Thank you for your support!

Experiences such as this show high school students the importance of community service and the positive impact they can make, helping others in-need.
