LANDOVER, Md. — New York Giants offensive lineman Nick Gates sustained a serious leg injury in the first quarter of Thursday night’s game against hosting Washington and had to be carted off.
The Giants announced that Gates suffered a lower leg fracture.
Gates’ injury occurred on New York’s second offensive possession as he was overpowered by Washington defensive lineman Jonathan Allen. The lower portion of his left leg appeared to bend sideways as he fell to the ground. The Giants medical team rushed onto the field to tend to the left guard, and put his left leg in an air cast.
The entire Giants roster took the field to encircle the cart and wish Gates well before the cart drove off into the tunnel.
Gates was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia and was set to stay overnight and have surgery on the fractured leg Friday morning, Giants coach Joe Judge said after the game.
