If you’re here, you probably know all about Yellowstone. The ranching show starring Kevin Costner is insanely popular right now, proven by the fact that its fourth season is currently in full swing. (And there are already rumors about season 5!) Another reason you know it’s a hit? Yellowstone is officially getting a new prequel series called 1883. 😱😱😱
As you can guess, 1883 isn’t exactly in the same time period as the current Paramount drama. You might have questions like: What’s 1883 about? Where can I watch 1883? Does 1883 follow the Dutton family? And, most importantly, when does 1883 premiere? Read all the nitty-gritty below!
Is 1883 a prequel to Yellowstone?
Yes! Paramount Network has described 1883 as "a Yellowstone origin story." The first teaser for 1883 describes one family's journey on "the road west," and it looks pretty intense at first glance. There are scenes showing violent battles, crowded caravans of covered wagons, and more than a few very distressed characters. All of this was accompanied by a chilling voiceover: "We are in the land of no mercy now," the mystery voice says. Goosebumps!
Though we love a vague clip, a few more details about the plot have finally been released. 1883 will in, fact, follow the Dutton family of the past, as they travel west through the Great Plains in search of the promised land: Montana. If you’re a fan of old Western movies, then you’re going to love this one, folks.

Who's in the 1883 cast?
1883 is shaping up to have a pretty star-studded cast. Sam Elliott has been tapped to play Shea Brennan, "a tough as nails, handsome cowboy with immense sadness in his past." His right-hand man, another grisly cowboy named Thomas, will be played by LaMonica Garrett. Country music icons Tim McGraw and Faith Hill will portray James and Margaret Dutton, the original "patriarch and matriarch of the Dutton family," and actress Isabel May will star as their eldest daughter, Elsa. We should've known it was going to be this good—just look at the Yellowstone cast! Now, may we suggest some of Ree’s celeb crushes for another John Dutton-equivalent role?
Can I watch the full trailer for 1883?
You might want to sit down for this one! Just 2 weeks before the series premiere, Paramount Network finally released a full trailer that features the main cast in full character, and gives even more hints about the show's plot. To call this clip "dramatic" would be a major understatement:
We don't want to speak too soon, but Tim McGraw's character James Dutton sure does remind us a lot of Kevin Costner's Yellowstone character, John Dutton. Or would that be the other way around?!
Will 1883 be on Paramount Network?
1883 will air exclusively on Paramount Network's new streaming platform, Paramount+, along with Yellowstone's fourth season. There are a lot of other good shows available there, so you might want to consider signing up if you like things like NCIS, Survivor, Blue Bloods (a.k.a. Tom Selleck), and more.
