Yellowjackets report: UWS women unable to withstand Auggies in opener

Sep. 2—SUPERIOR — Wisconsin-Superior bent but didn't break until late. Despite facing 22 shots, 11 of them on target, it took a 69-minute goal from Augsburg's Samantha Meyer to net the visiting Auggies a 2-1 non-conference women's soccer victory in the first regular-season game of the year for both teams on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Jayla Ponce put Augsburg in front in the 14th minute at NBC Spartan Sports Complex, but the Yellowjackets' Mya Holmquist had a reply goal just 18 seconds later.

The teams remained deadlocked until Meyer broke through with 21 minutes to play, and it would be the deciding goal. Yellowjackets goalkeeper Jenna Lang made nine saves for UWS, which had four shots for the game, two on target.

UWS (0-1) stays home for a Sunday game against Hamline.

MINNEAPOLIS — Blake Perry scored first for Wisconsin-Superior, but that was all the Yellowjackets manager in a 3-1 season-opening men's soccer defeat at Augsburg on Thursday.

Perry put the Yellowjackets on top just three minutes into the game at Edor Nelson Field, but the Auggies tied it and took the lead on goals about five minutes apart from Nick Zuchowski and Camel Htoo. Zuchowski added a second goal less than two minutes from the finish.

UWS held a 16-14 shot advantage (7-6 in shots on target). Goalie Patrick Sessions made three saves for the Yellowjackets.

UWS (0-1) has its home opener on Wednesday vs. Bethel.
