Yellowjackets report: Big road wins for UWS soccer teams

Sep. 25—The Wisconsin-Superior men's soccer team grabbed all the goals it needed in the first 37 minutes of a 5-0 rout of Martin Luther in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 24 in New Ulm, Minnesota.

It took Blake Perry just 96 seconds from the opening kickoff to score his seventh goal of the year and put the Yellowjackets in front. The visitors uncorked a flurry of goals in the 22nd, 29th, 31st and 37th, Phillip Eriksen getting two of the four to get to five goals for the season.

UWS held the game down from there, allowing the hosts only six shots, two on frame, for the contest while recording 28 (13 on target) of their own.

Patrick Sessions and Alex Paredes shared goalkeeping duties, with Paredes making two saves in his 45 minutes of work.

UWS (4-2-1, 2-0-1 UMAC) continues a stretch of road games with a Friday afternoon date at Crown.

UWS reached 3-0 in the UMAC with relative ease on Saturday, dominating Martin Luther 3-0 on Saturday in New Ulm, Minnesota.

Lindsey Schendel's first goal of the season put the Yellowjackets in the lead in just the fourth minute of play. Kamryn Hill added to the lead in the 31st minute with her third goal of the year.

Mya Holmquist added a goal late for the Yellowjackets, now 3-3-2 overall. Jenna Lang made three saves in the UWS goal as the Yellowjackets benefited from a 19-5 advantage in shots (13-3 on target).

UWS plays again Friday at Crown.

A pair of 16-kill performances from Alexie Pryd and Maiana Stark helped Wisconsin-Superior see off Bethany Lutheran 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18) at Mertz Mortorelli Gym in Superior on Saturday.

The win continued UWS's unbeaten start to the UMAC volleyball season and evened UWS's overall record at 7-7.

UWS overcame a 22-19 deficit to win set one, then held off a Vikings charge in set two. Set three got away from the Yellowjackets, but in the fourth, Superior's 10-2 run gave them the lead for good, as they won four of the last five points.

Kaylin Plautz added 11 kills for UWS. Lizzy Schmidt led UWS passing with 22 assists, followed by 18 from Colleen Claude, while Jenna Anderson handled the first ball with 34 digs. Pryd added 23.

The Yellowjackets will play a nonconference match at Wisconsin-Stout on Tuesday night.
