Xavier Prep, La Quinta pick up boys' basketball wins in final pre-league tuneup

The Xavier Prep boys' basketball team is off to a solid start this season and moved to 3-1 with a convincing win over Cathedral City in a cross-league matchup Tuesday night.

The Saints won 88-50 and got a big night from Chris Dodge who had 29 points and 14 rebounds. Quentin Pellum had a stat-stuffing night with 13 points, six steals, eight rebounds and six assists. Ryan Fimbres added 12 points.

Cathedral City was led by CJ Taylor with 17 points and Louie Cabrera with 14 points.

La Quinta 70, Imperial 56: The Blackhawks picked up their first win of the season as they get set for league play which begins Thursday.

Malachi Murrell had 25 points, 15 rebounds and five assists in the win. Hayden McKee added 20 points including four 3-pointers, while Ryan Henderson added seven points and seven rebounds.

The Blackhawks (1-2) open league play on the road Thursday at Xavier Prep.

Girls' basketball

Shadow Hills 47, Imperial 44: A tough test was passed by the Knights on Tuesday as they moved to 4-0 on the season. Megan Martinez and Nathalia Hernandez stepped up with starters Carla and Victoria Hyatt in foul trouble. Sonia Urbina made clutch free throws to put the game away.

Carla Hyatt had 15 points, Urbina 14 and Victoria Hyatt 12.

Next up for the Knights is the DEL season opener when they play at Rancho Mirage on Thursday.

Xavier Prep 56, Cathedral City 10: Amoree Ferrel lit up the scoreboard with an impressive triple-double of 22 points, 11 rebounds and 12 steals. Rosalee Gutierrez added 14 points and Genna Wieneke had 11 points.

Danica Palmersham had four points for the Lions.

The Saints (2-0) begin league play on Thursday at La Quinta.

Girls' soccer

La Quinta 4, Coachella Valley 2: The Blackhawks edged the Arabs in a battle of two of the top teams in the desert.

Iliana Rivera had a hat-trick to lead La Quinta while Samantha Knox added another goal. Goalkeeper Ashlyn Alvidrez had two penalty kick saves to keep the Arabs in check.

Xavier Prep 5, Aquinas 3: Easton Seip had an amazing game with four goals to lift the Saints. Freshman Sienna Ianni added a fifth goal in the win for the Saints. It was the first game of the season for Xavier Prep who now move into league play on Thursday at La Quinta.

Desert Christian Academy 2, West Shores 2: The Conquerors hosted West Shores and rallied twice to earn the tie. Lauren Putnam and Charlotte Rose scored the goals for Desert Christian Academy and Jessica McQuown had 12 saves in goal.
