Wu flirts with lead, easily makes U.S. Open cut

Jun. 18—Dylan Wu shot a second-round 73 and easily made the cut in the U.S. Open today at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.

The Medford golfer finished his suspended first round this morning, ending up with a 1-under 70 after a birdie on his last hole.

He turned right around and started play in the second round with another birdie, and got to 3 under with a birdie on the fourth hole.

Wu barely missed a 16-foot putt from just off the green on No. 5 that would have given him a share of the lead at 4 under.

His two-round score of 1-over 143 left him tied for 25th place when he finished. The players in the afternoon wave were in the early stages of their rounds.

The projected cut line was 4 over when the 24-year-old Wu, who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, finished.

Wu is a 2014 graduate of St. Mary's High and is a member of the Korn Ferry Tour, where he's 28th on the points list. He qualified for the U.S. Open by placing second in a sectional tournament last week.

After Wu's brush with the lead on No. 5, he bogeyed Nos. 6 and 7 to fall back to 1 under.

He played the next seven holes in even par, throwing in a birdie and a bogey before a double bogey at the 15th knocked him back.

Wu regrouped to par the last three holes despite a driver that often found the rough.

Wu hit only three of 14 fairways, which ranked him in the bottom third of the field, but more often than not, he overcame it with clutch putts. Over the final 10 holes, he made three putts from 16 to 18 feet to save par.

Wu's Saturday tee time and playing partners will be determined at the completion of Round 2.
