WT BRIEFS: Buffs' duo earns LSC honors, indoor track opens season in Kansas

CANYON — The West Texas A&M duo of Larry Wise and Kavon Booker swept the Lone Star Conference's weekly honors after stellar performances over two New Mexico schools last week, the league announced Monday.

Wise earned the LSC Offensive Player of the Week as he averaged 18.5 points per game to lead the No. 5 Buffs to a pair of victories over Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico. Booker earned the LSC Defensive Player of the Week after leading a Buffs defense that limited the two opponents to 66.5 points per game and 43.1 percent shooting from the floor.

Most recently, Wise and Booker were among five Buffs who reached double-figures in Saturday's 73-70 win over Western New Mexico at the First United Bank Center, having previously defeated Eastern New Mexico 81-63 last Thursday.

The win meant WT rolled to a five-game winning streak to move to 10-1 on the season while the Mustangs fell to 5-2.

Alongside Wise and Booker, Cameron Bell put up a season-high 12 points while Hayden Blankley and Zach Toussaint each posted 10 points. Free throws separated the Buffs from WNMU's offense as WT recorded a season-high 27 shooting 75% from the free-throw line.

The Buffs return to action at 11 a.m. Monday when they host Champions College for the Community/Education Game at the First United Bank Center.

WT women's basketball

CANYON — Haylei Janssens scored a career-high 20 points on Saturday as the Lady Buffs rolled to their fourth straight win in a 74-47 victory over the Western New Mexico Mustangs at the First United Bank Center.

Janssens guided the Lady Buff offense as the junior went 10-of-13 from the floor to go along with 11 rebounds for her first career double-double for WT. Madison Kast went 3-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line for a season-high 11 points while Alivia Lewis finished the afternoon with four points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

The Lady Buffs finished the game going 28-of-73 (38.4%) from the floor including 3-of-17 (17.6%) from deep and 15-of-19 (78.9%) from the free-throw line with 59 rebounds, eight assists, 13 turnovers, four blocks and 12 steals.

WNMU finished the game going 20-of-65 (30.8%) from the floor including 4-of-12 (33.3%) from deep and 3-of-6 (50%) from the stripe to go along with 36 rebounds, five assists, 19 turnovers, five blocks and five steals.

The Lady Buffs hit the road for a non-conference regional showdown with the #2 Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian on Tuesday night at the Rip Griffin Center where LCU holds a 93-game home win streak, tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. in Lubbock.

WT Indoor track and field

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Four WT runners showcased strong performances at the Crimson & Gold Invite hosted by Pitt State last Saturday.

Senior Grace Dwyer made her track debut on Saturday as she finished fourth overall in the women's 5,000-meter race, missing the provisional mark by 21.14 seconds. Dwyer completed the first race of the season with a time of 17:57.56. Daphne Pate was the second Lady Buff to compete for WT. The sophomore finished the 5000m race 23rd overall in 19:38.71.

On the men's side, Jay Hall and Briggs Wittlake each competed in the 5,000-meter race for the Buffs. Hall finished 14thwith a personal best time of 14:59.08 while Wittlake followed closely behind at 15:05.65 to finish 16th.
