Wrestling: Benson nabs a couple of victories

Mar. 6—BENSON — A flurry of pins ended with A.J. Klassen delivering to Benson a victory over Crosby-Ironton on Friday.

The junior recorded a takedown before pinning Rangers eighth-grader Ben Gripentrog in 1 minute, 39 seconds in a 220-pound match to seal the dual with one match remaining.

The Braves went on to win 42-28 in the first part of a triangular at Benson High School. Benson later defeated Border West 49-22.

"It was just nice to go out there and win it for the team," Klassen said. "I was just trying to score some points, snap him down and put him in a cow catcher."

The home team collected five pins, two regular decisions, a technical fall and a major decision against Crosby-Ironton.

"We wrestled well tonight," Benson head coach Scott Thompson said after the team's first win. "The bottom half competed well, which put us in the top dual and our top half has a lot of upperclassmen. They wrestled well and did their jobs."

Benson trailed 22-9 before scoring the next 18 points. Ninth-grader Nick Bolduc started the run after earning an 11-4 decision over Colby Hanson in a 145-pound match. Next, Adam Koosmann pinned Isaac Turner in 57 seconds before Adam Zosel notched an 8-2 decision over Jake Klancher. Nathan Bolduc capped the rally with the quickest fall of the night when he defeated Hayden McGowan in 36 seconds.

"Nick Bolduc got a pretty big win for us at 145," Thompson said. "A couple freshmen going at it there. That was a fun matchup and that was probably a swing match right there."

Nathan Bolduc's fall was the first of four straight pins. Mike Fitzpatrick won at 182 as the visitors regain a 28-27 advantage.

Thomas Dineen gave the hosts the lead for good. He improved to 26-0 after steamrolling Kale Dugan in 1:41. The sophomore, who is ranked first in Class A at 195 pounds, scored two quick takedowns before hooking Dugan's leg and finishing him off with a cradle.

"I thought I wrestled (well)," Dineen said. "Each meet is another opportunity and I'm glad we can compete with this crazy year that's going on. The ultimate goal is to get to the top and my family and friends are helping me get there."

Benson senior Hae Wah opened the day with a 16-1 technical fall of Mike Anderson at 106 pounds. Fellow senior Colby Hogrefe followed with a 11-2 major decision of Fletscher Peterson at 132. Preston McGee collected the team's first pin of the day at 138 when he defeated John Fitzpatrick in 1:42.
