Worcester man in court on 8th-offense drunken driving charge

WORCESTER — A city man was arraigned Monday in Worcester Superior Court on a charge of eighth-offense drunken driving.

Ronald F. Hurley, 56, was recently indicted on the charge, as well as five others, after allegations he was at the wheel of a vehicle that crashed in Oxford Dec. 6.

Oxford police at the time said they were called to the area of McDonald's on Sutton Avenue for a reported crash, with one vehicle leaving the scene and heading toward Interstate 395 South.

A police chase led to the woods near 94 Main St. Oxford police, with the help of Charlton police and a tracking dog, said they caught Hurley as he was leaving the woods.

Hurley was initially charged in Dudley District Court with seventh-offense drunken driving, a figure that was later upped to eighth-offense drunken driving.

He was further indicted on charges of reckless driving, leaving the scene of personal injury, leaving the scene of property damage, driving with a license that had been suspended for operating under the influence and use of a vehicle without proper authority.

Hurley pleaded not guilty to the charges during a brief arraignment Monday. He was ordered held without bail pending a hearing slated for April 20, to determine whether he will be ordered held for up to 180 days as a dangerous person.
