Women’s hockey: Gophers score four unanswered goals to beat Minnesota State, 4-1

Abigail Boreen scored two goals, and Ella Huber added three assists as fifth-ranked Minnesota scored four unanswered goals to beat Minnesota State, 4-1, on Friday at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.

Audrey Wethington and Abbey Murphy added goals, and Grace Zumwinkle (3) and Huber (2) combined for five assists for the Gophers (11-3-2, 10-2-2), who scored three second-period goals.

Kennedy Bobyck started the scoring, giving the Mavericks (7-8 overall, 5-8 WCHA) a 1-0 lead 13 minutes, 22 seconds into the first period. Minnesota State outshot the Gophers 14-12 in the opening period, but Minnesota clamped down, allowing only 15 shots on goal the rest of the way.

Gophers goaltender Skylar Vetter finished with 24 saves.

Boreen tied the game on a power-play goal at 7:44 of the second period, and Murphy scored the go-ahead goal even strength on assists by Zumwinkle and Huber at 12:02.

Mavericks goaltender Alexa Berg stopped 33 of 37 shots on goal.

The two-game weekend series continues Saturday with a 2 p.m. puck drop at the Mayo Clinic Event Center in Mankato.
