Woman ‘in a hurry’ to buy Powerball ticket uses special dates and wins big in Virginia

Elsie Lambino was “in a hurry” when she stopped to buy a Powerball lottery ticket, she told lottery officials.

Lambino, who lives in Virginia Beach, hastily chose her ticket numbers by cobbling together family birthdays and anniversary dates - a combination that won her $100,000, lottery officials said.

“I said to my husband, ‘This can’t be!’” Lambino told lottery officials after she found out she won.

Lambino bought her lucky ticket at Food Lion at the Fairfield Shopping Center in Virginia Beach for the Oct. 26 Powerball drawing, lottery officials said in a Nov. 22 news release.

The Virginia Beach woman matched four winning numbers and the Powerball number, totaling a $50,000 prize, lottery officials said. She also spent an extra dollar for Power Play, which doubled her win.

“I feel so happy,” she told lottery officials.

Lambino did not have “immediate plans” for her winnings, according to lottery officials.
