Man found dead at John Adams Way: The latest on Louisville's 2022 homicides

Louisville's homicide total for 2022 sits in the triple digits, marking the first time the city has seen more than 100 homicides in a year for three years in a row.

So far during 2022, police have investigated at least 162 homicides in Louisville — with the deaths of three pregnant women each being counted as double homicides.

Homicides include those investigated by Louisville Metro Police as well as other Jefferson County law enforcement agencies.

The Courier Journal is tracking each killing to better understand violence in the city and memorialize the victims.

Below are the most recently available statistics about this year's homicides, along with links that will provide information about each victim's case.

Man found dead on John Adams Way

A man was found dead on the scene at the 6800 block of John Adams Way on Dec. 23, said Alicia Smiley, spokesperson for the Louisville Metro Police Department.

Police responded to a call of a "shooting incident" at a residence around 1 a.m., Smiley said. At the scene, police located an adult male with at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No suspects have been publicly identified.

Man found dead in Chickasaw Park

A man was found on Dec. 18 in Chickasaw Park, Louisville Metro Police said.

Second Division officers responded to a call about a person laying on the ground inside Chickasaw Park. When officers arrived, they found the individual who had suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene, LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said.

Mitchell said the homicide unit is investigating and no suspects have been arrested.

The person who was killed was identified by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office on Dec. 20 as 15-year-old Ja’Maury Johnson.

2 dead after shooting in St. Denis neighborhood

Two men died on Dec. 18 after a shooting in the St. Denis neighborhood, Louisville Metro Police said.

Second Division officers responded to assist emergency medical services in the 4500 block of Broadleaf Drive. When officers arrived, they found two men who had been shot, LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said. He said the victims were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The victims have not been identified.

The LMPD homicide unit is investigating, Mitchell said, and no suspects have been identified at this time.

Woman dies in shooting in Algonquin neighborhood

A woman died on Dec. 16 after a shooting in Louisville's Algonquin neighborhood, Louisville Metro Police said.

Second Division officers responded to a call about a shooting around 8 p.m. in the 2300 block of W. Lee Street, where they found a woman who had been shot, LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said. He said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mitchell said the homicide unit is investigating and no suspects have been arrested.

The victim has not been identified.

Man dead after shooting in Sunset Circle

A man died on Dec. 16 after a shooting in Sunset Circle, Louisville Metro Police said.

Second Division officers responded to a call about a shooting around 7:20 p.m. at the 4500 block of Sunset Circle, where they found a man who had been shot, LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said. He said the victim was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

No suspects have been arrested and the department's homicide unit is investigating, Mitchell said.

On Jan. 10, 2023, Tevin Smyzer and Justyn Walls were charged with murder and several counts of wanton endangerment, as police said five people were in the home. Both entered initial not guily pleas at a court hearing the following day.

The victim was identified in court documents as Eric Williams.

One dead after shooting in Wyandotte/Oakdale neighborhood

A man is dead after a shooting on Dec. 15 in the Wyandotte/Oakdale neighborhood, Louisville Metro Police said.

Fourth Division officers responded to a call of a shooting in the 800 block of Denmark Street at around 1:30 a.m., according to a statement from LMPD. When officers arrived, they found a man that had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene, LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said.

Mitchell said the department's homicide unit is investigating and said there were no suspects at this time.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 21-year-old Gary Charles Edwards Jr.

Roderick Moss Jr.

A man was found dead inside a vehicle on Dec. 10 in the Russell neighborhood, Louisville Metro Police said.

First Division officers were dispatched on a report of a man down inside a vehicle in the 1500 block of W. Chestnut Street at around 8 a.m., according to a statement from the department. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a man inside a vehicle who was pronounced dead, LMPD spokesperson Alicia Smiley said.

The death was later ruled a homicide. LMPD's homicide unit is continuing the investigation, Smiley said.

The man was later identified by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office as 32-year-old Roderick Moss Jr.

Ja'Ronnie L. Charlton

A man died on Dec. 10 after a shooting in the Jacobs neighborhood, Louisville Metro Police said.

Fourth Division officers answered a call about a shooting after 3:30 p.m. at the 1800 block of Carl Court in south Louisville and found a man with at least one gunshot wound, LMPD spokesperson Alicia Smiley said. She said emergency service officials pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Smiley said the department's homicide unit is investigating the incident and did not say if there are any suspects.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim on Dec. 13 as 25-year-old Ja'Ronnie L. Charlton.

Man dies after shooting in River Park Drive

A man died on Dec. 6 after a shooting at River Park Drive, Louisville Metro Police said.

Second Division officers responded to a call about a shooting around 2:30 p.m. in an area of River Park Drive and 39th Street and found a man with gunshot wounds, Louisville Metro Police spokesperson Elizabeth Ruoff said. She said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the victim has not been released.

On Jan. 19, 2023, LMPD said two juveniles, ages 15 and 17, had been arrested in connection with the case and charged with murder and first-degree robbery. No additional information was released.

2 men dead after shooting on Arthur Street

Two men are dead after a shooting in Old Louisville around 7:15 p.m., Dec. 5, Louisville Metro Police said.

Fourth division officers responded to a shooting in the 1600 block of Arthur Street in a parking lot where they found one man who had received fatal gunshot injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man was also suffering from gunshot wounds and was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Kelen A. Slaughter, 31, was arrested May 4, 2023 in connection to the double homicide. He was charged with two counts of murder, two counts of first-degree robbery, and three counts of trafficking control substances complicity − meth, fentanyl and an unspecified drug.

Terrodd Stewart

One man was found dead after a shooting in the southwest portion of Louisville on Dec. 3, Louisville Metro Police said.

Third division officers responded to a call of a shooting in the 2100 block of Cardinal Woods Drive and found a man and a woman had been shot. Louisville Metro Police spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said the man received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman received non-life threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

The LMPD homicide unit is investigating the case.

The victim was later identified by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office as 32-year-old Terrodd Stewart.

Mary Stanton, Andrianna Stanton, Brianna Stanton and Gary Stanton

Three women and one man were found dead on Dec. 3 in a home in Louisville's Valley Station neighborhood, Louisville Metro Police said.

Third division officers responded to a call about a shooting of multiple victims at a home in the 4500 block of East Pages Lane and found one adult woman, two girls and a man all deceased, Louisville Metro Police spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said. He said that their investigation revealed the man shot the two girls and the woman and then shot himself.

The man, the adult woman and the two teen women were identified by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office as Gary Stanton, 60, Mary Stanton, 45, Andrianna Stanton, 17, and Brianna Stanton, 11.

Corey D. Parker

A man was found fatally shot in Louisville's Taylor Berry neighborhood on Nov. 25.

Fourth Division officers responded to a call about a shooting in the 3100 block of Taylor Boulevard, according to a statement from LMPD, and when they arrived at the scene they found a man who had been shot several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was identified later by the Jefferson County Coroner's Officer as 52-year-old Corey D. Parker.

LMPD's homicide unit is investigating with no arrests in connection with the shooting.

William L. Miller

A man died after being shot multiple times in Louisville's Russell neighborhood on Thanksgiving, according to LMPD.

Police responded to a report of a shooting on Nov. 24 at 31st Street and River Park Drive at around 6 p.m., according to department spokesperson Alicia Smiley. The individual was taken to University of Louisville Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was identified on Nov. 28 by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office as 47-year-old William L. Miller.

The LMPD homicide unit is investigating the case.

Man found dead after shooting on South Shelby Street

A man was found dead after a shooting on Nov. 20 in the Phoenix Hill neighborhood, Louisville Metro Police officials said.

First Division officers responded to a call about a shooting on the 500 block of South Shelby Street at 6:30 a.m. When officers arrived, they found the man had been shot and had received fatal injuries. Dwight Mitchell, a spokesperson for LMPD, said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Montez L. Anthony, 21, was arrested on Nov. 29 and charged over the incident, LMPD spokesperson Aaron Ellis said. He said Anthony was charged with murder, first-degree wanton endangerment, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

Jackson R. Mingus

A man was pronounced dead on Nov. 19 after a shooting on Manslick Road, Louisville Metro Police officials said.

Third Division officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 10400 block of West Manslick Road. When officers arrived to the scene, they found a man inside a vehicle who was fatally shot and was pronounced dead at the scene, LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said.

The victim was later identified by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office as 19-year-old Jackson R. Mingus of Louisville.

On Feb. 8, 2023, LMPD announced a 16-year-old boy had been arrested and charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence and first-degree robbery in connection with the shooting.

Deondre K. McRae

A man was found fatally shot on Nov. 18 on Fegenbush Lane, Louisville Metro Police said.

Sixth Division officers responded to a call about a shooting at about 2:30 p.m. at the 4600 block of Fegenbush Lane, where they found a man who had been shot and killed, department spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said. He said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The LMPD Homicide Unit is investigating the incident, but there have been no arrests in connection to the incident.

The victim was identified a day later by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office as 29-year-old Deondre K. McRae.

Man killed in shooting near Auburndale

LMPD is investigating a fatal shooting that took place on Nov. 11 near Louisville's Auburndale neighborhood.

Third Division officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 1100 block of Royal Gardens Court just after 8:30 p.m. that evening, according to a statement from department spokesperson Alicia Smiley, and found an adult man at the scene who had been shot at least one time. He was pronounced dead on site, Smiley said.

LMPD's homicide unit is investigating, Smiley said.

The man who was killed has not yet been identified.

Man dies after Breckinridge Lane shooting

A man died on Nov. 5 after being injured in a shooting on Breckinridge Lane the day before.

Sixth Division officers responded to a call about a shooting on Nov. 4 at around 7:15 p.m. in the 2900 block of Breckinridge Lane, where they found a man who had been shot, Louisville Metro Police spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said. He said the victim was taken to the University of Louisville in critical condition., where he succumbed to his injuries early the next morning.

Mitchell said the homicide unit is investigating the incident, and there have not been any arrests in connection to the shooting. The victim has not been identified.

Man died after stabbing in Kenwood Hill

A man died after been stabbed in Kenwood Hill on Nov. 4.

Louisville Metro Police officers responded to a call about a stabbing on Southside Drive at National Turnpike at about 9:45 p.m., where they found a man who had been stabbed, LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said. He said the victim was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The person who was killed has not been identified, and nobody has been arrested in connection to the incident. The homicide unit is investigating.

Christen Lovett

A Louisville man has been charged with murder over the killing of a toddler, according to an LMPD arrest citation.

Derrick Taylor Jr. has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder over the Nov. 2 death of Christen Lovett, a 1-year-old boy. Taylor was arrested in connection with the case on Nov. 14, according to his arrest citation.

The arrest report said Taylor told investigators he had been at home alone with Christen on the day of his death and that the boy had not exhibited irregular behavior that day before he began having difficulty breathing. An autopsy found several signs of blunt force trauma, the citation said, including head injuries that resulted in his death during the time Taylor and the boy were alone together.

How have the 2022 victims died?

Of the 121 homicide victims, the majority − 112 − were shot. The body of one victim was also burned after his death.

The others include two people who died from blunt force trauma, six people who were stabbed to death and one man who died after being struck by a pickup.

Where were the killings in Louisville?

The killings have occurred throughout the city, in each LMPD division. According to data provided by LMPD, the Fourth Division has seen the most killings at 27. The others, according to the data, have seen:

  • First Division: 26

  • Second Division: 17

  • Third Division: 17

  • Fifth Division: 3

  • Sixth Division: 18

  • Seventh Division: 5

  • Eighth Division: 6

Additionally, Shively police have investigated three homicides.

How does this year's violence in Louisville compare to 2021?

Last year, Louisville endured 211 killings - up from 187 in 2020. The majority were fatal shootings.
