A car sideswiped another vehicle, leading to a woman, who was speaking to the driver of the front vehicle, to be fatally hit, Phoenix police said.

A woman who was hit by a car early Monday morning died from her injuries, according to Phoenix police.

The woman was identified by police as Candice Russell, 41. Russell reportedly stopped a car going eastbound on Buckeye Road and asked the driver to call 911. A second vehicle came from behind and swerved to avoid a collision, but was unable to and sideswiped the vehicle in front.

Russell was struck by the first vehicle in the chain reaction. She was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, where she later died. The people in the vehicles did not require transport to the hospital.

Police are unsure why Russell needed to call 911. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
