A wintry mix of snow and freezing drizzle is expected to continue through the late morning in the Milwaukee area, turning to rain in the afternoon.

The precipitation could make some roads slippery with slush or a glaze of ice, said Denny VanCleve, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sullivan.

By 10:30 a.m., about one fifth of an inch of snow had accumulated in Sullivan as temperatures hovered around freezing, VanCleve said.

Closer to Lake Michigan, higher temperatures mean that falling snow is less likely to stick.

The coming rain is expected to melt any snow. It will likely rain through the afternoon and evening across the area, VanCleve said.

Meteorologists expect Sunday's round of precipitation to be followed by strong wind and a drop in temperatures.

Sunday night through Monday, wind gusts of 40 to 45 mph are possible. The Weather Service reminded residents to secure any loose objects outside.

On Monday morning, temperatures are expected to begin in the upper 20s and fall throughout the day. By Monday evening, meteorologists predict temperatures will be in the upper teens.

Monday night, VanCleve said wind chills could be minus-5 to zero degrees, with low temperatures in the upper single digits.

"This cold will hang on through the first part of the week and it'll start to moderate in the second half of the week," he said.

The burst of chilly weather follows warmer than normal temperatures in the Milwaukee area for the start of December.

Through the first four days of December, temperatures were about 7 degrees above normal, VanCleve said.

Despite a few unusually warm days in November, the month had a nearly normal average temperature.
