New Hanover's Aidan Payne named StarNews Athlete of the Week

Receiving more than 45 percent of this week's fan vote, New Hanover's Aidan Payne is the winner of the latest StarNews Athlete of the Week Poll.

Payne finished off his spectacular senior season with a dominant week, scoring six goals and dishing out one assist as the Wildcats went 2-0 and won the NCHSAA 4A State Championship Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Hough. Payne was named Most Valuable Player of the Championship match.

Here are this week's other nominees for Athlete of the Week.

Chance Mason, South Brunswick boys swimming: Mason won two individual races and was a member of two winning relays in a Thursday meet against New Hanover and West Brunswick. The South Brunswick junior took home first place in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. South Brunswick's boys won the team competition.

Darcey Kate Britt, Coastal Christian girls basketball: Britt opened her senior season with 18 points Tuesday night, leading the Centurions to a 48-30 win over Freedom Christian Academy.

Jayden Harrison, Laney wrestling: Harrison was one-of-seven Buccaneers to win with a pin Wednesday night Laney opened its state-title defense with a convincing 62-13 win over Ashley. Then over the weekend, Harrison won the 138-pound weight class title at the Homer Spring Bulldog Invitational.
