Winter Haven man dies after oncoming car slides into his on wet road

WINTER HAVEN— A 61-year-old Winter Haven man died after his car was hit by another car that lost control on a wet road and slid into the oncoming lane on Spirit Lake Road on Wednesday.

The Polk County Sheriff's office said deputies responded to the crash at about 6:10 a.m. on Spirit Lake Road near Lake Sears Drive in Winter Haven.

In a release, officials said 21-year-old Michael Hill of Bartow was driving a white 2014 Cadillac CTS southbound on Spirit Lake Road while 61-year-old Marvin Gilbert Jr. of Winter Haven drove a gray 2010 Infiniti northbound on the same road.

The Sheriff's Office said Hill lost control of the Cadillac for unknown reasons and it spun and slid across the median and into the northbound lanes.

According to a release, Hill's Cadillac slid into the path of Gilbert's Infiniti. Officials said it was dark and rainy at the time of the crash and both drivers were the only ones in their vehicles.

Both men were taken to a hospital to treat their injuries, which the Sheriff's Office said didn't seem to be life-threatening at the time. But Gilbert's condition unexpectedly worsened, and the Sheriff's Office learned that he died from his injuries Thursday morning.

The investigation is ongoing.
