Winner woman identified as victim of fatal Sunday crash near Bonesteel

Jul. 1—BONESTEEL, S.D. — A 55-year-old Winner woman has been identified as the person who died Sunday, June 26, in a two-vehicle crash west of Bonesteel.

Shortly before 2:45 a.m. Sunday morning, authorities in Gregory County were called to mile marker 300 of U.S. Highway 18, roughly three miles east of St. Charles or five miles west of Bonesteel, for a report of a crash.

Preliminary crash information indicates that both vehicles were westbound on U.S. Highway 18, when the driver of a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado did a U-turn and collided with a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.

Susan Bell, the driver of the 2011 Chevrolet pickup, was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other passengers in the 2011 Chevrolet.

Norman Chasing Hawk III, 42, of Winner, was the driver of the 2008 Chevrolet pickup. He was wearing a seat belt and sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. Charges are pending against him.

The two female passengers of the 2008 Chevrolet were airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital. The other male occupant suffered minor injuries.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
