Windber's Shuster, Berlin's Kimmel collect top All-Somerset County football honors

For the second straight season, Windber senior running back John Shuster was selected All-Somerset County Offensive MVP while Berlin Brothersvalley junior linebacker Cody Kimmel garnered Defensive MVP when the 2022 team was released on Thursday.

Windber's Matt Grohal was tabbed Coach of the Year.

Shuster tallied 2,669 rushing yards and 38 touchdowns in 2022. In the process, he reached 100 career touchdowns and went over 6,000 career rushing yards. He finished his illustrious high school career with 6,720 rushing yards.

Meanwhile, Kimmel starred for the Mountaineers after moving from safety to mic linebacker full-time this year.

Kimmel led the Mountaineers with 92 total tackles, to go along with 2 1/2 sacks an interception and fumble recovery. He had 18 tackles for a loss.

Grohal guided Windber to an 11-2 mark and the program's first District 5 title since 2008, defeating previously unbeaten Northern Bedford, 14-0. It was Windber's first D5 crown in Grohal's 12-year tenure at the helm of the Ramblers.

Windber was lights out on defense down the stretch and thrived on offense before falling to state semifinalist Steelton-Highspire in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.

After its Week 5 loss to Berlin Brothersvalley, Windber pitched six shutouts and allowed just seven points until its PIAA first-round setback. Meanwhile, the offense racked up 325 points during that stretch.
