  • Nadal wins in four sets against Cerundulo

  • Nadal made to work for first round victory

Rafael Nadal is confident that he will not join Wimbledon’s growing list of Covid-19 casualties after keeping his Grand Slam hopes alive with a four-set first round win against Francisco Cerundulo.

Nadal had practiced on Centre Court last Thursday with Italy’s Matteo Berrettino, who became the latest men’s seed on Tuesday to withdraw from the tournament after contracting the virus.

The French player Alize Cornet was also quoted earlier in the day as saying that “everyone had Covid at Roland [Garros in the French Open]" but players chose to keep their infections secret.

"When we see that Krejcikova withdraws saying I have Covid, and that the whole dressing room is sick. At some point we may all have had the flu," she told French outlet L'Equipe. "The thing is, we have three symptoms. The throat scratching, we play and everything is fine, it's OK. In Roland, yes, I think there have been a few cases and it is a tacit agreement between us."

Nadal, who won the French Open, said that he was not aware of Covid cases in Paris but was told recently that players do not need to take a Covid test even if they have symptoms.

Fears of serious disruption among the leading men’s players at Wimbledon were heightened following the loss of both Berrettini, last year’s finalist and one of the tournament favourites, and Marin Cilic who reached the 2017 final. Nadal stressed that he trained only outdoors with Berrettino last week.

“It is difficult to be a close contact when you are outside,” he said. “Anything can happen but, for the moment, I’m feeling good. The physio told me if you have symptoms it is up to you if you have a test or not.

“If you have a test, and you are positive, you are out. If you are telling me if you have a positive and you can still play, I didn’t know. We need to follow the rules and if we don’t the world is a mess.”

Wimbledon was cancelled completely due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and returned last year subject to strict protocols. In common with most sporting events, those protocols have been significantly eased this year despite the recent wider community spike in Covid-19 infections. The protocols are being constantly reviewed.

After comfortably winning the first two sets against Cerundulo, Nadal was briefly threatened with a deciding fifth set in what was his first grass court match in three years.

Yet after trailing 4-2 in the fourth set, he produced a flawless 15 minutes to reel off four games and become only the fifth player after Rod Laver, Mats Wilander, Novak Djokovic and Jim Courier to win his first 15 Grand Slam matches of a calendar year.

"At the most critical moment I raised my level - that is a very positive thing," said Nadal. "Every day I survive there is a bigger chance that I start playing at a much higher level.

"After three years of not playing here I'm very happy to be back. The last three years I didn't put a foot on a grass court, so it always takes a while in my first match. Every day is a test and this was an important test.

"At the beginning of the tournament and under the circumstances I arrived here, the victory is the most important thing.

"Everyone knows I had to do some things on my foot, but the most important thing is I am in Wimbledon 2022 and I won my first match."

'The Australian's pantomime villainy' - Kyrgios update by Chief Sports Writer Oliver Brown

Nick Kyrgios, pure vaudeville as ever, has drawn his energy in this third set from consistently abusing a lineswoman. Rounding on the lady, who corrected herself on one call, he muttered: 'These people are in their nineties - they can't even see the ball.'

It is extraordinary the umpire has not even seen fit to admonish him yet, let alone penalise him. So far, the Court No 3 crowd appears to be relishing the Australian's pantomime villainy, even against a British opponent.

01:06 PM

Warning for Kyrgios

Kyrgios explodes on Court 3 as his serve is broken by Paul Jubb and he then smacks a ball out of the court and onto the main road presumably.

He's given a ball abuse warning by the line judge.

To compound matters, Jubb holds serve in the next game and takes the set 6-3.

12:57 PM

Kyrgios underarm serve klaxon!

It hasn't taken long for the Australian to dip into his trick shot box.

Leading 40-0 on his serve, he plays an underarm serve through his legs. Ridiculous.

Ready for some more tennis?

Hello again and welcome to day two of the Wimbledon Championships.

Monday was a thrilling start to the tournament with shock results, five set wins, rain delays and an inevitable late finish under the Centre Court roof with Andy Murray.

Today, it is the turn of the 22 and 23-time grand slam champions as Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams get their campaigns underway on Centre.

However, it is French Open champion Iga Swiatek who starts proceedings on the main show court. The world No 1 has won her last 35 matches and starts against Croatian qualifier Jana Fett, ranked 254. And Swiatek admits she is still getting used to playing on grass.

"Honestly I still feel like I need to figure out grass. Last year, for sure, it was that kind of tournament where I didn't know what to expect," Swiatek told reporters on Saturday.

"Then match by match I realised maybe I can do more and more. Still this year I only played, like, 10 days on grass, so it's not a lot. I didn't have a lot of time to prepare.

"But I'm just trying to stay open-minded and kind of take positives from the situation and realise that I can play without any expectations."

Elsewhere, there are plenty of Brits in action and we will start the day from Court 12 where wildcard Ryan Peniston makes his Wimbledon debut against Switzerland's Henri Laaksonen, who is ranked 95th in the world.

Peniston has climbed more than 200 places in the rankings in a year to a current career high of 147, marking his first forays on the ATP Tour by reaching the quarter-finals at both Queen's Club and Eastbourne.

The left-hander will hope to continue that strong form against Laaksonen in the first round while close friend and prospective housemate Alastair Gray takes on former Wimbledon junior champion Tseng Chun-hsin.

The 24-year-old Londoner, ranked 283, is following in the footsteps of Cameron Norrie having overlapped with the British number one for a year at Texas Christian University in the United States before turning professional last spring.
