Williams scores twice as Red Raiders shut out Iowa State

Ashleigh Williams scored the first two goals and Madison White made three saves as Texas Tech shut out Iowa State 3-0 Thursday night in Big 12 play at the John Walker Soccer Complex.

Williams scored in the 26th and 61st minutes, the latter off a free kick from Charlotte Teeter. Two minutes later, a foul inside the box gave Tech a penalty kick that Macy Schultz converted.

Tech (6-3-5, 2-1-2) has five victories and three ties in its past nine matches. Iowa State (3-6-3, 0-3-1) lost its third match in a row.

The multi-goal performance was the second of Williams' career and the first by a Red Raiders' player this season.

White's shutout was the 23rd of her career. Tech outshot Iowa State 11-6, holding the Cyclones to one shot in the first half. Shots on goal were 4-3 in the Red Raiders' favor.

Tech volleyball

Texas Tech, which had a four-match win streak snapped Sunday by No. 1 Texas, will try to start another hot streak when the Red Raiders take on TCU in a Big 12 match at 6 p.m. Saturday in Fort Worth.

Tech is 13-3 with a 2-1 record in conference action. TCU is 7-8 and 2-2.

Kenna Sauer leads five Tech players with triple-digit kills total. She has 240 kills, followed by Reagan Cooper (141), Brooke Kanas (124), Karrington Jones (101) and Maddie O'Brien (100). Reese Rhodes leads Tech in assists with 592 and Maddie Correa leads in digs with 225.

LCU women's cross country

Madelyn Merrell finished second in a meet for the second week in a row, each time with a personal best, helping Lubbock Christian University finish second as a team Friday in the NCAA Division II Preview.

Running on the Lady Chaps' home course at Chaparral Ridge, Merrell ran the 5-kilometer race in 18 minutes, 47.00 seconds. The junior from Idalou had run a personal best 19:13.1 in LCU's previous meet, the New Mexico Junior College Invitational.

The second-place finish for the team also was the Lady Chaps' second in a row. LCU's Sky Sena from Lubbock-Cooper finished seventh in 19:52.70, Hailey Lowery (20:29.30) from Borden County placed ninth and Chloe Trull (20:42.20) from Ropes got 10th. Sena's and Lowery's times also were personal records, and Trull's top-10 finish was her third in a row.

The next-best finishers for LCU were Adrianna Langat (21:16.50) in 13th, Amy Tew (21:33.80) from Tahoka in 14th and Sydnei Orozco (21:38.50) from Levelland in 15th. Sheyla Vilca (21:51.00) placed 16th.

New Mexico Junior College won the team title, and NMJC's Damaris Chewon was the individual winner in 18:07.20.

LCU men's cross country

Colby Sandoval led a group of four Lubbock Christian University runners to top-10 finishes, helping the Chaparrals take second place as a team in the NCAA Division II Preview meet Friday at LCU's Chaparral Ridge course.

Sandoval, a sophomore from Christ The King, ran the 8-kilometer race in 26 minutes, 11.40 seconds for sixth place. Next behind him were teammates Carlos Barraza (27:31.10) from Lubbock High in seventh, Tristan Young (28:27.70) in eighth and Aiden Zingone (28:37.30) in ninth. Hagen Sage (29:15.50) from Idalou came in 11th, and Luke Mosley (30:55.00) placed 15th.

Sandoval was the first Chaps runner to cross the finish line for the third race this season. Sandoval, Barraza and Young finished in the top 10 for the second meet in a row, and the back-to-back top-10s were career firsts for Sandoval and Young. It was Barraza's sixth career top-10 finish.

German Vega of New Mexico Junior College won the individual championship with a time of 24:49.50. The Thunderbirds won the team title as well.

LCU men's soccer

Lubbock Christian University, coming off a win over a ranked team for the second time this season, will try to add another when LCU takes on No. 8 Midwestern State at 3 p.m. Saturday in Wichita Falls.

LCU (4-4-3, 1-0-1 in the Lone Star Conference) edged No. 16 Oklahoma Christian 1-0 on Wednesday behind a goal from Heriberto Campuzano and a shutout from goalkeeper Tom Miles. The Chaps' other win against a ranked team came on Sept. 17 over No. 18 West Texas A&M.

Midwestern State (6-2-2, 0-2) was picked to repeat as the LSC champion in the preseason poll of coaches, media and sports information directors, but the Mustangs started conference play with losses to Oklahoma Christian (2-1) and Eastern New Mexico (1-0).

Midwestern State leads the series with LCU 7-0-4. The past two matches were scoreless draws, the most recent on Sept. 24.

LCU women's soccer

Lubbock Christian University, coming off a nine-day layoff, will try to keep its unbeaten season going when the Lady Chaparrals play a Lone Star Conference road match at 2 p.m. Saturday at UT Tyler.

LCU (6-0-5, 3-0-2), forecast for eighth in the conference preseason poll, is in fourth with 11 points. Ahead of the Lady Chaps are Angelo State (10-2-1, 5-2) with 15 points, Dallas Baptist (8-1-1, 4-1-1) with 13 points and St. Edward's (8-2-2, 4-1-1), also with 13.

UT Tyler (6-2-2, 1-2-2) is 6-0-1 at home this season, but the Patriots have only two ties and a loss in their past three matches.

LCU's Lexi De La Cruz (eight goals, one assist, 17 points) is tied for third in the conference in goals and ranks fourth in points. Graycen Rasmussen (5-2-12) is tied for eighth among LSC goal scorers and ranks sixth in points.

Rasmussen, a freshman from Joshua, scored five points in recent two matches, tallying an assist and a goal in a 3-1 victory Sept. 21 at Oklahoma Christian. Her penalty kick goal Sept. 21 against Texas A&M International was enough for the Lady Chaps to knock off the Dustdevils 1-0. Rasmussen ranks third in the LSC in shots with 30.

UT Tyler's Samaris Alvarado (6-1-13) is tied for fifth in the LSC in goals and eighth in points.

Tech women's tennis

WACO — Texas Tech players won five singles and five doubles matches on Friday's first day of the HEB Invitational.

Tech's Avelina Sayfetdinova defeated No. 59-ranked Marlee Zein from Texas 7-5, 6-4 for the Red Raiders' biggest win of the day. Other Tech singles wins came from Metka Komac, Cristina Tiglea, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Camryn Stepp.

In doubles, the teams of Komac-Sayfetdinova and Tiglea-Olivia Peet won twice apiece. Stepp and Dmitrichenko won their first match and lost their second.

Tech players resume competition on Saturday.
